Fishing at Vallecito Lake

When Fishing at Vallecito Lake

Vallecito Lake is one of Colorado’s premier high-mountain fishing destinations, nestled in the heart of the San Juan National Forest just 18 miles from Durango.

Whether you’re casting from the shore, trolling from a boat, or hiring a local guide, the fishing experience here is as serene as it is rewarding. Anglers come for the chance to reel in record-breaking Rainbow, German Brown, or Cutthroat Trout, and often go home with Northern Pike and Kokanee Salmon as well.

A serene lake reflects the blue sky, surrounded by forested hills. The water's edge is lined with small, green shrubs and plants. Fluffy clouds scatter across the sky, creating a peaceful and picturesque landscape worthy of an art gallery exhibition.

Get Your Colorado Fishing License & Vallecito Recreation Permit

Before casting your line, make sure you’re properly licensed. In Colorado, anyone aged 16 or older is required to have a valid fishing license. You can purchase your license online through Colorado Parks and Wildlife or in person at local retailers such as Walmart, tackle shops, or outdoor outfitters in Durango and Bayfield. Daily, 5-day, and annual options are available for residents and non-residents. You’ll also need a Habitat Stamp if you're 18 or older. It’s automatically included with your first license purchase of the year.

Vallecito Lake also requires a recreation permit. Anyone accessing the lake needs a recreation permit (one per vehicle), which can be purchased at our camp store or Vallecito Marina.

Bringing Your Own Boat

Both motorized boats and non-motorized watercraft, such as kayaks and canoes, are allowed on the lake. We allow boat parking at your site (if it fits), or you’ll find extra space in our overflow area.

We are just a few miles from the public boat ramp and Vallecito Marina. To launch your boat, you will need a boat and recreation permit. Visit our Boating at Vallecito Lake page to learn more.
